Why We Built a Multi-Stage Verification System
Most French Bulldog directory sites accept anyone willing to pay a listing fee. We saw families unknowingly contact backyard breeders, puppy mills with professional websites, and brokers posing as small hobby programs. In 2019, we started tracking complaints and refund disputes—nearly 60% involved breeders who had never submitted proof of health testing or allowed a facility review.
We built our verification pipeline to solve that problem. Every breeder moves through the same stages, earning advancement through documentation, transparency, and a clean track record with buyers.
Stage One: Identity and Business Verification
Before a breeder profile goes live, we verify the humans and entities behind it. We require a government-issued ID that matches the name on the kennel's business registration or DBA filing. If the applicant operates as an LLC or corporation, we cross-reference that entity with their state's Secretary of State database—we've caught duplicate names, dissolved entities, and addresses that traced back to freight-forwarding centers in Dallas and Houston.
We verify the physical address using a combination of satellite imagery, local property records, and cross-checks against USDA inspection databases. Applicants using PO boxes, mail drops, or commercial office suites are asked for the actual location where dogs are housed. If they refuse, the application stops.
Health Testing Requirements by Tier
Health testing separates hobby breeders from puppy producers. We don't accept breeder declarations or in-house vet letters. We require third-party documentation uploaded directly from the testing lab or registry.
New breeders (0–6 months on the platform) must submit proof that at least one parent has current health clearances. We accept OFA cardiac exams (echocardiogram preferred, auscultation minimum), patella evaluations, and CERF eye clearances dated within 24 months. DNA color panels from Embark or Animal Genetics must confirm the dog is free of disqualifying mutations.
Trusted breeders (6+ months, no unresolved complaints) are expected to test both parents for every litter. We flag profiles where testing gaps appear across multiple litters.
Verified breeders submit full OFA or OVC documentation for hips, patellas, cardiac, spines (hemivertebrae screening), and CERF eyes on all breeding stock. BOAS (brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome) functional grading is encouraged but not yet required—only a handful of breeders in Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico have access to veterinary specialists trained in BOAS scoring.
Health Certified breeders maintain the Verified standard plus participate in at least one breed-health research study or data-sharing initiative per year. They upload every test result within 30 days of receipt. Their profiles display a green "Health Certified" badge and populate a dedicated filter in search results.
Kennel Visits and Video Walkthroughs
We visit breeders within a four-hour drive of our team in Austin, Fort Worth, Oklahoma City, and Albuquerque. These aren't inspections—we're not veterinarians or USDA compliance officers—but we observe living conditions, meet the dogs, and verify that the breeder's operation matches what they describe online.
For breeders outside that radius, we require a live video walkthrough conducted over Zoom or FaceTime. The breeder walks us through whelping areas, adult dog housing, outdoor access, and socialization spaces. We ask to see dogs interacting with family members and observe body language, coat condition, and behavior. Breeders who keep adults in kennel runs or crates for more than 18 hours a day do not advance.
Video walkthroughs are recorded (with the breeder's consent) and reviewed by two team members independently. Discrepancies trigger a follow-up call or an in-person visit.
Buyer Reference Checks
Starting at the Verified tier, we contact recent puppy buyers directly. We pull contact information from the breeder's records and reach out via email and text. We ask about communication responsiveness, contract clarity, puppy health at delivery, and whether the breeder provided post-purchase support.
We look for patterns. A single unhappy buyer doesn't disqualify someone, but three families reporting the same issue—delayed health records, pressure to waive contract terms, puppies arriving with respiratory infections—triggers a formal review and possible suspension.
Elite and Hall of Fame breeders undergo reference checks annually. Buyers are contacted at the six-month and one-year marks to assess long-term health outcomes.
Response-Time Monitoring
We track how quickly breeders reply to inquiries submitted through the platform. Families expect timely answers, especially when they're comparing multiple programs.
Trusted breeders must maintain an average first-response time under 48 hours. Verified breeders are expected to respond within 24 hours. Elite breeders consistently reply within 12 hours and maintain weekend availability.
Breeders who go silent for more than five days without setting an away message receive a warning. Repeated delays result in profile suppression—listings move lower in search results until response time improves.
The Six-Tier Recognition System and What Changes
Each tier unlocks profile features, search visibility, and trust signals.
New breeders get a basic profile with contact information and a gallery. Their listings appear in search but below Trusted and higher tiers. The profile displays "New Breeder – In Verification."
Trusted breeders (six months, clean record, basic health testing) earn a blue checkmark and move up in search ranking. They can publish a detailed "Our Program" narrative and link to social media.
Verified breeders (full health testing, walkthrough complete, reference checks passed) receive a gold badge. Their profiles appear in a dedicated "Verified Breeders" filter and rank higher in all search results. They're eligible for featured placement in weekly email digests.
Health Certified breeders display a green ribbon and appear first in health-focused search queries. Families filtering by "OFA Certified Parents" or "BOAS Tested" see these profiles before others.
Elite breeders (three+ years on platform, 25+ verified buyer reviews, participation in breed education) get dedicated profile pages with extended galleries, video embeds, and priority customer support. Their waitlist and upcoming litter announcements are highlighted on the homepage.
Hall of Fame is reserved for breeders with five+ years of spotless records, contributions to breed health research, and mentorship of newer breeders. Fewer than a dozen programs currently hold this designation across Texas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico.
How This Protects Families
Verification doesn't guarantee perfection, but it raises the floor. Families know the breeder has been vetted, their dogs have been health tested, and other buyers have reported positive experiences. That transparency makes better decisions possible.
