French Bulldogs come in more colors than any other AKC breed. Some are ancient and universally accepted — fawn, brindle, cream, pied. Others are recessive rarities the standard doesn’t recognize but the market has fallen in love with — blue, lilac, isabella, chocolate, merle, platinum, and the double-recessive “new” colors that appear every year.
The color you choose isn’t just aesthetic. Color is coded by five genes (called loci) that also influence coat texture, eye color, pigmentation, and — in some cases — predisposition to skin, eye, and neurological issues. A responsible breeder tests every dam and sire on a full 5-locus DNA panel before pairing. An irresponsible one guesses, or worse, breeds double-dilutes without knowing the risks.
